(Tanzania Widows Association - TAWIA)
Wajane wkieleza changamoto zinazowakabili
Day).
Message from Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations
On International Widows’ Day, 23 June 2013
We
commemorate the third International Widows’ Day for the hundreds of millions of
women in the world who suffer exploitation, deprivation and exclusion when
their husbands die. Today, we call for stronger action to end widespread
discrimination against widows because no woman should lose her rights when she
loses her husband.
Every human being has the right to live in dignity with
equal rights and opportunities to realize their potential. Yet women and girls
continue to face gender-based violence and discrimination, and this is the case
for many widows around the world.
Many widows are denied their rights—from being evicted from
their homes because they cannot inherit property or the land they live on to
being forced into exploitative and risky sex work to support themselves and
their families because they have no income and nowhere else to turn.
An estimated 115 million widows are currently living in
poverty, and 81 million have suffered physical abuse, some from members of
their own family. Adolescent girls, many of whom have been married off too
early to much older men, are at great risk with very little protection.
It is our collective duty to ensure that widows of all ages
and their children are treated as full and equal citizens, with equal
opportunities for education, participation in the economy and decision-making,
and a healthy life free of violence and discrimination.
We must recognize the role of widows as not only victims of
poverty, conflict and natural disasters but as peace-builders and re-builders
of families, communities and societies. National laws and policies that
protect and promote the rights of widows should be guided by the Convention on
the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Convention of the
Rights of the Child.
UN Women works in partnership with governments and with the
private sector, to support the economic empowerment of widows in Asia, Africa
and Latin America.
kompyuta, ushonaji, lugha, mapishi, ujasiriamali n.k. Mafunzo hayo yanatolewa
bure hapohapo ofisini.
wamekuwa wakisaidika mara moja.
unawashukuru wale wote wanaoendelea kutoa ushauri wao ili kukiboresha, pamoja
Tanzania.
